Statement by Sean Hurley
Along the transit corridor, there are food deserts defined as no grocery stores within a kilometre. The LRT puts five grocery stores within easy and convenient access.
LRT has pre-pay, all-door and level boarding so passengers can wheel their buggies on as well as their wheelchairs at any open door. LRT connects people with healthcare, jobs, and entertainment nearly as conveniently as driving.
Building LRT replaces hundreds of millions of dollars of ageing infrastructure that we would otherwise pay for ourselves. It makes the transit corridor AODA compliant. Not just the LRT but the lights, the intersections, and all city infrastructure along the path. A first for Hamilton.
LRT opens the corridor to pedestrian friendly development putting stores and people on the street. It invites new commercial and residential development increasing the tax base and adding to available housing. It provides families the opportunity to live with out a car potentially saving thousands of dollars that could instead be spent on affording a better quality of life.
It injects a billion+ dollars directly into our city to be spent on contractors, services, and materials.
Please don't squander this opportunity.
