Statement by Andrew Konken

As someone who lives, works and plays in Hamilton. It was devastating to hear that the LRT had been scrapped by the Ontario Conservative provincial government.

I currently am commuting from the East end of Hamilton near Stoney Creek to downtown each day during the week for work. Then I pay $7 a day for private lot parking. All while adding to the already congested streets of downtown Hamilton and adding more greenhouse gases to the environment. I was very much looking forward to the option of taking the LRT to work daily while parking at/near Eastgate Mall.

Outside of my daily commute. The LRT would have meant a viable option to get to/from downtown for events at the Hamilton Convention Center, First Ontario Place/Concert Hall, Tim Hortons Field, and the West end of the city down by McMaster for some cycling paths up to Dundas peak.

It's a shame that Mr Ford and his government would rather scrap a program that's been in development for over 10 years, for the sake of balancing a budget. As a government who's supposed to be for the people. They continue to cut programs and services needed by the people who are the most in need. It's a disappointment to say the least.
