Statement by Jackie Dekar
I am the fourth generation of my family to be born and raised in the core of the city. I spent every Saturday going to the market with my grandparents, picking up bread at National bakery and shopping at Eaton’s, Robinson’s, Kresge’s and Woolworth’s. The downtown core was alive back then. I loved how close I lived to the action! It’s been so sad for me, personally, to witness the decline of our beloved downtown. We need LRT in Hamilton for so many reasons but for my nostalgic heart, one important reason is to return the downtown core to its former self. To bring businesses and consumers back to the core and ensure Hamilton is a city of the future so more generations of my family stay and love this city as much as I do. This is our city, our Hamilton and our voices matter.
